This is a book I will keep on hand to share as often as possible. It is a balanced and wise approach to overcoming addiction, with both inspirational and practical advice. It includes supporting LDS doctrine, personal stories, and proven clinical advice. I highly recommend reading this book! I am involved in anti-pornography issues and I am so grateful to have this book to share with people who are looking for help.
This book deserves all five stars and if I could rate it higher I would. When you are truly ready to begin the challenging and rewarding journey to sincere recovery, Roger Stark will guide you with wisdom in these pages. You have to be ready to make true change to feel its magic, but you will feel it. It will help you make the changes you need in your life. It will help you understand the roots of many of the challenges you face every day. I felt like he had written this book just for me. As I read it, I felt over and over like the words were speaking truth to my soul and teaching me more about my true self. It is my opinion that this book is one of the crown jewels of addiction recovery literature. The only thing it left me wanting was more. I highly recommend it as a must read and a must have. It will help take you where you really long to be, when you are ready! Find out why you will never look at a waterfall the same ever again!
This book made it easy for me understand and recognize my addictive thinking and destructive behavior. Then it helped me identify a clear path of recovery that I could commit to. It is one of the most transformative tools I have used in my recovery process.
This book is an absolute must read. Stark steps passed the symptoms of addiction (alcoholism, illicit drug addiction and sexual addiction) and works to identify and expose the roots of our addictive behaviors in order to heal from the inside and progress away from the despair of active addiction.
His writing style flows freely and is easy to understand. He offers personal accounts, accounts of others and relatable analogies to help us connect to what he is teaching.
The Waterfall Concept truly is a blueprint for addiction recovery, as it focuses more on the solution than it does the problem. Focusing on our problems drove us to addiction - focusing on recovery is what will help us break the chains of our bondage.

The "Waterfall Concept" by Roger Stark is a well written book that is very informative and easy to understand. Roger provides excellent insight into addiction and recovery, that I believe would be very beneficial not only to individuals struggling with their own addiction, but to family, friends, or others concerned about a loved ones addictive behaviors.
The analogy of the addictive process to a waterfall, and the need to "stay away from slippery places", is an insightful comparison. The author also does an excellent job of combining the steps of AA with relapse prevention strategies and gospel principles. The need for spirituality in recovery is emphasized, by combining clinical knowledge with scriptures and quotes from LDS church leaders. I would also recommend this book to clinicians who work with individuals struggling with addictions or in recovery.

Waterfall Concept is a blue print for recovery. It is written from the prospective of thinking through the inter personal desires to recover. Roger Stark has combined his clinical and real life experiences to provide a total concept of recovery.
I read this book in about two days. I was fascinated with Roger's approach to addiction recovery. His fearless integration of truth from many different resources will make The Waterfall Concept the book that speaks to a new generation of people. The stories and imagery Roger uses will absolutely sharpen your mind and create awareness that will change your life. I especially loved the concept that addiction was a refusal to progress and recieve inspiration. This statement was something so obvious to me as I read it, but I had never been able to make that connection before. Buy the book to read more of Roger's insights that can only truly come from someone who has first hand experience with addiction.
This book is a powerful tool for those struggling with addictive behaviors or those who work with those who struggle. It's power comes from the fact that the author does not teach theory, but teaches principles that work as they have been "field tested" in his own experience as a recovering addict. I highly recommend it to anyone wrestling with any kind of addictive behaviors.
Looking for help and picking up the book has to be the first step. Once you begin reading, you know that Brother Stark "gets it". This book is easy to read and digest, both for a person struggling with addiction, and for the people who love them. The concepts are attainable and realistic, gleaning from scripture, 12-step principles and personal experiences of other addicts. This book acts as a guidebook to a sober life.
Everyone deserves sobriety and health. This book is a good first step in that direction.
Alcoholism or any other addiction is really a disease of the spirit, the emotions, the mind and the body which can be like an unexpected hand grenade thrown into the center of one’s personal and sacred family life. These addictions destroy our strength of will—Often without us fully recognizing what is happening to us in the process. Once these awful and encompassing addictive chains possess us—It can become impossible for us to escape from them and find true healing and freedom without the help of God and God’s enlightened children—Happily, Roger Stark is one of God’s enlightened Children.
No one can really begin to understand just how difficult it can be to recover from dangerous addictions unless they have personally been seriously addicted themselves. Because of Roger Stark’s training he is not only professionally qualified to help others escape from the grip of their additions—Roger has first hand knowledge in suffering through and finding recovery from his own life-shattering addictions.
Roger Stark’s “The Waterfall Concept” is a Masterpiece in Recovery Literature. Using meaningful and clear analogies, Roger takes those who struggle with their addictive behaviors on a well mapped out journey out of the wilderness of addictions with clear signposts along the way. Roger has a literary gift in using his own hard won experiences to guide others on this journey—But this is not all—Roger liberally calls on and refers to the wisdom of the ages both through Scripture and the solid and sure teachings of LDS General Authorities and others to show addicts HOW, through the Grace of God, to find lasting freedom and true recovery from the devastation of addictions.
As an LDS recovering pornography addict, I have read many, many books by both LDS and non-LDS authors for finding help, strength and ideas in recovering from the horrible chains of this addiction. Roger Stark’s landmark book, “The Waterfall Concept” is like no other book written on this subject. Study it. Ponder its principles with prayer as you take this journey with Roger as your guide. Do the work that this guide suggests and you will discover the freedom from the addictions that hold you fast.
