Product Description

Rachel Fletcher thought the biggest secret she'd ever have would be her crush on Jason West. But everything changes the night her father dies in a car accident — an accident she believes is all her fault.

Starting high school is hard enough but carrying her secret guilt, enduring her mother's depression, and, worst of all, dealing with the alcoholism of her seventeen-year-old brother Ryan, plunge Rachel into a world she never wanted or imagined. Add to all that the unwelcome intrusion of a stepfather and a teen-aged stepbrother — a stepbrother she doesn't want to like but can't help liking. Maybe too much.

It isn't long before Rachel feels totally overwhelmed. Things like this aren't supposed to happen to good LDS people, so why are they happening to her? She's praying for Heavenly Father's help. Why isn't he listening?

With two new people living in her home, nothing can remain a secret for long. Rachel learns that Heavenly Father doesn't always answer our prayers in the way that we want, but he does answer them — in his own time, usually through other people, and often in unexpected ways.

Reading this book is like being on the rollercoaster ride of high school all over again.

Kay Lynn Mangum did a fantastic job writing, When the Bough Breaks. Reading this book is like being on a rollercoaster ride with highs and lows that make you not want to stop reading. She takes you back to high school with the main character. She allows all those feelings and anxieties to rush back but ends the book in a way that leaves you refreshed. This book makes you open your eyes and want to reach out to someone that may need your help. You will feel uplifted and enlightened when you turn the last page. The plot of The Secret Journal of Brett Colton fits into this book perfectly but you don’t have to read it first. This book can stand alone. I highly recommend this book especially if you are going through a hard time.

A more realistic treatment of depression is needed,
By , Submitted on 2015-02-25

I picked up the book because I was intrigued by the story that deals with the effects of teen alcoholism and depression on an L.D.S. family. While the author does a good job introducing these challenges, I was disappointed with some of the characters' attempts to deal with them. For example, I feel that Rachel's mother should have eventually taken a more active role in overcoming depression. Instead, she appears to be 'rescued' and completely transformed by a second marriage. I have learned that people who suffer from depression as severe as the case described in this novel can not possibly 'pull out of it' without professional intervention, personal effort, patience, and prayer. I wanted to see a more realistic and sensitive treatment of how Rachel and her mother come to grips with this challenge. Unfortunately, I didn't find it in this story.

I was very captivated with this novel! From the first paragraph to the last I felt as if I was in Rachel Fletcher's world myself. The events of Rachel's life are very relatable and will surely tug at your 'heart strings'. I can only hope to read more novel like this!

High school like I remember it.

I just finished reading the book this morning, and though I have been out of high school for some time now, the author does a great job of capturing those high school days. The highs, the lows, the hopes and all of those awkward moments you hope that know one else remembers. It brought back a lot of memories. I could identify with many of the growing pains Rachel experiences. I have not had to watch a family member suffer with addiction, so it was interesting to read and learn a little more about it. It made me realize how important it is to become more sensitive, especially to the family members who are suffering with such heavy burdens.

Back up to par with the Secret Journal

AMAZING!!!!!

This book was amazing!! I love this author! This book was extremely moving and touching. I cried several times. I loved how realistic it was. Sometimes books can be too unrealistic, making things work out perfectly that wouldn't likely happen. I couldn't think of anything I'd change about the book. It captures high school and the feelings of a 16 year old girl perfectly. I also loved how it fit in with the plot of 'The Secret Journal of Brett Colton.' For those who loved that book, they should read this one too!!
