It's a question we've all faced at one time or another. Why isn't God answering my prayers? We may seem to be doing everything right—going to church, fulfilling our callings, striving to strengthen our families, and, of course, praying. But still the answer doesn't come. If there are no serious sins blocking out the whisperings of the Spirit, why then do the windows of heaven still seem to be closed?
In his wise, conversational style, best-selling author Gerald N. Lund offers suggestions and solutions for all who are anxiously hoping to hear the voice of the Lord in their lives. He helps us to approach this timeless question with new perspective and insight that will help us realize the ways the Lord is answering our questions or the reasons He might not be—yet.
It could be that we just don't recognize God's answer when it comes. Perhaps we are unable to hear the still, small voice amid the commotion and distractions of life or are struggling with feelings of anxiety, fear, and doubt. Or maybe we haven't yet put in adequate effort to receive the answer God wants for us. Whatever the case, if you have felt out of tune with heavenly communication, you are not alone. Using real-life examples and expertise garnered from a lifetime of teachings, Gerald Lund turns our desperate plea—Why isn't God answering me?—into a question of hope that will ultimately draw down the powers of heaven in our behalf.

LOVED this book and have re-read it twice, underlining and more underlining as I grasped the importance of personally being prepared to hear the Lord speaking to me. There are so many reasons we aren't prepared to hear God, and Brother Lund has given me tools to use in which to "hear" the Lord speak to me. I am on my third time through the book, trying to memorize all I've been studying. How blessed we are to have this information! Thank you, Brother Lund!!
Going in, I personally felt that I was recieving answers to my prayers. I expected to learn ways to help other people who might be asking the title question. I finished the book having gained valuable insight into strengthening my faith and my ability to receive, interpret, and discern revelation.
This book was my introduction to the work of Gerald Lund. I work at Seagull Book so I'm familiar with his titles. I did not expect to get much out of this book since I thought of him as a fiction writer, not an inspirational scholarly type. I was pleasantly surprised. I am now a fan and will go on to read his other non- fiction books.
I guess I have a little different take on the other reviewers. I found the book to be more full of things people do that are "wrong" or "not in the right spirit." I know that is kind of a cultural issue amongst the LDS people, that we spent much time telling each other in lessons and talks what we are doing wrong. I actually quit listening to this book because of that. I think people learn in different ways and at different levels, and there was too much focus and generalization of what we are doing "wrong." If one member feels even some growth and understanding it is a positive outcome. There is more than one way to learn to listen to the promptings. I generally enjoy Brother Lund's insight and his books, but this one I cannot recommend.
I learned so much from this book! I loved the examples that were given of why we might not be hearing the Lord as we are seeking answers. As I read this book I realized it is the small things such as life distractions, that are keeping me from really hearing what the Lord wants me to hear. He isn’t ignoring me, I’m just not in the right place to hear him. This book is a great reminder of how we can really prepare ourselves to listen to the Lord.
This book came at just the right time. I have struggled to recognize answers to my prayers and at the same time am really needing some guidance from the Lord. This book reminded me of what I need to be doing in order to be receptive to the promptings and feelings I receive. I would highly recommend this book to everyone!
At a time in the world that church leaders are urging us to reach a little higher and become a little better, I have been wondering how to know what God wants me to improve. This book has shown me how to make my prayers more meaningful and how to recognize the voice of the Lord. It gives many suggestions on how to remove distractions and recognize other possible roadblocks to our receiving revelation. With many thought provoking quotes and a clear concise writing style, Gerald Lund has again written an inspiring message that seems especially timely. This book can be a game changer in your relationship with God.
Yet another amazing book by Brother Lund. This book is not what I was expecting. I thought it was going to tell me what I needed to do/change in order to open the channels of communication so I may receive answers. I thought it was going to tell me what to expect, what type of feeling I would have as my prayers were being answered.
I have always known that not every prayer is answered as soon as we say “Amen” and sometimes we don’t receive an answer that will stop us in our tracks and be able to say “That’s the answer to my prayer”. Most answered come in forms we don’t expect or realize at the time.
This book is a great reference- not a book to tell you that God doesn’t listen because you are a sinner, it’s a book that gives suggestions on how to be able to communicate- guilt free. Not sin free, we all sin, but the best thing I took from this book is that you don’t have to be perfect, our Heavenly Father will listen to us anytime we speak. Every prayer doesn’t have to be a “pleading for forgiveness “ prayer. He understands my heart and what I’m going through, I don’t need to avoid prayer because of guilt.
This book is one to have on hand and read regularly, there is a chapter in here that you may need, this book is written in such a way that a chapter may be all you need at that time.
Go into this book with an open mind, it isn’t a lecture structured book- it is a gentle suggestions to help you figure out what you think may be the reason the communication is blocked. You are not given a step by step guide on what has to happen to open the communication. It is a guilt free book yet it has information that you may see in yourself that needs to change, that between you and the Lord. Brother Lund explains and helps us to see for ourselves the things we can work on. I could go on and on about the tone of the book but until you read it you may not understand. That being said I highly recommend reading this book, this resource unlike any other book of its kind, is a book well worth your time to read.
This book was so good and really spoke to me. Brother Lund gives concrete examples of why we might not be hearing the Lord as we seek answers. I realized it’s often because of small things in my life that are crowding out the Lord. He isn’t ignoring me, I’m just not in a place to hear Him.
So grateful for this book and the concepts that are taught here.
Brother Lund’s book focuses on many reasons why we might not be hearing or receiving answers to our prayers. Some reasons may surprise such as “unwarranted discouragement”, idleness, pessimism etc. Some reasons are good reminders such as noise, contention etc. Some reasons may be that we misunderstand Gods purposes or ways. The section on counterfeit revelation is timely for any age. This book has good quotes from Church leaders and scriptures to support the ideas. My favorite chapter was Drawing on the Powers of Heaven. I recommend this book and feel there is something for everyone in it. I received a free copy for a review.
This was not written as a learning tool for an investigator of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It's appropriate to lead with that statement because Brother Lund prioritized making it very clear the numerous questions the content is "not" intended to address. That preface is much appreciated, as it helps the reader develop the necessary mindset to absorb the rest of this wonderful book. It's written for people who have a strong grasp of the gospel, the importance of prayer, and the opportunity for repentance through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Brother Lund draws from scripture, the revelations of past and modern-day prophets, seers, and revelators - as well as sharing his own reflections. This will stimulate the reader's mind and heart to actively seek why they feel God might not be answering their prayers. He assists our problem solving by offering up many different challenges stemming from the clash of our temporal and spiritual lives. The entirety of Brother Lund's wisdom contained herein can be absorbed in a relatively short amount of time. The reader will likely find him/herself highlighting parts of many different pages to reference again at a later date.
What can I do to get my prayers answered more effectively and what can I stop doing that is hindering answers to prayer? If you've ever asked yourself these questions this is the book for you. Well written and very engaging. God knows exactly how to answer your prayers, whether you know it or not, He is always answering. The way He answers is as individual as you and me. Think you're not getting answers? Think again. God knows you personally. Maybe his answer is a wakeup call that you need to change something or maybe you're ready for a step up the 'spiritual ladder'. Whatever the reason, the answer God gives is the PERFECT ONE FOR YOU!
In the April 2018 Conference, President Nelson said: "I urge you to stretch beyond your current spiritual ability to receive personal revelation, for the Lord has promised that 'if thou shalt seek, thou shalt receive... Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. ...But in the coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost. ...I plead with you to increase your spiritual capacity to receive revelation" (Ensign, May 2018, 96).
Gerald N. Lund wrote this book to help people get answers to their prayers for personal revelation, and suggests we see it as "a pantry of possible answers to our 'Whys.' He suggests that the reader ask themselves what they can do and what they should stop doing to increase their ability to receive those answers. His book is a wonderful tutorial for increasing our abilities to "stretch beyond [our] current spiritual [abilities] to receive personal revelation." In "Part I: Why, Why, Why?" using scriptures and teachings from the prophets and apostles, Elder Lund addresses principles that govern the flow of personal revelation and our understanding of God's power and how lack of faith in our own worthiness hinders our ability to receive what is given to us, and reminds us of God's love, mercy and long suffering. "Part II: The Still, Small Voice and Inner Noise" addresses how the revelatory voice works and how personal and environmental elements can affect our ability to receive personal revelation. It is truly a pantry of different solutions to those problems. "Part III: Meeting the Conditions Set by the Lord" addresses the issues of counseling the Lord, being slow to hearken, and not thinking before asking. "Part IV: Drawing Down the Powers of Heaven" is a powerful treatise filled with prophecies for our day. Elder Lund's book is timely and relevant as we seek to follow the counsel given us by our prophet, President Russel M. Nelson. I highly recommend it.
This book is a good resource to remind you of the different things that can be getting in the way of you receiving and recognizing answers to your prayers. Lund writes in an easy to understand tone with quotes from current church leaders.
This book is a great guide on changes we can make in our lives to help facilitate our God given ability to seek out and recognize promptings and answers to our prayers. Looking forward to implementing these changes!
I very much recommend this inspiring read. With an easy, flowing style Lund examines deep and thought provoking principles essential to receiving personal revelation. He simply states iniquity is a given block to receiving revelation and then moves to focus on little things that even those striving to live the gospel might find a hindrance in receiving and recognizing answers to our prayers. It’s on my reread list and my reference shelf. Definitely worth my time!
Gerald Lund has done it again. This book points out ways in which we can be distance ourselves from the Spirit. Each chapter is filled with quotes from church leaders and scriptures that help explain how we distance ourselves and how we can close the gap between us and our Heavenly Father. He suggests ways in which we can say more meaningful prayers and offers ways in which we can change, so that we can quit asking, "Why isn't God answering me," and finally feel like our prayers are being heard. I really enjoyed reading this book and am excited to implement many of the things that were brought out in this great book.
Gerald Lund has the abilities of a master teacher. He is able to provide clear, well defined answers to troubling questions. He does so brilliantly in this new book. Brother Lund mixes the scriptures, quotes from Church leaders, and his own insights to provide sixteen wonderful chapters that provoke the reader to serious introspection of his own efforts to receive answers to prayer. The book is an inspiration to read, meditate on, and to reread! Thank you, Brother Lund!
