The Lord commanded the members of the Church, "Be one; and if ye are not one ye are not mine." (D&C 38:27.) Nowhere is this commandment more applicable than in marriage, for partners in marriage are to be of one flesh and of one heart. In One Flesh, One Heart: Putting Celestial Love into Your Temple Marriage, Carlfred Broderick, well-known marriage counselor, Church leader, and author of the popular book Couples, notes that having a temple marriage is not enough. And he explains how couples married in the temple can continue to grow together and support each other in love until their temple marriage becomes a celestial marriage, a marriage in which they are one. The author writes: "One Flesh, One Heart is not for everyone. It presumes an audience that is committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and to an eternal marriage. It assumes that even these couples may yet find room for improvement. "I have been privileged to share the joy and pain of many good people and to profit from their experience as well as my own. I feel an obligation to pass on the things that I have learned. My prayer is that they may be useful to Latter-day Saint couples who are truly seeking to become one flesh and one heart."
