Today some question the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Others who profess to follow Him claim unwittingly that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a non-Christian organization, since we do not agree in all points of doctrine with historical, traditional Christianity. I therefore deem it expedient to declare my conviction and belief about the Lord Jesus Christ." So writes Ezra Taft Benson, president of the Council of the Twelve Apostles in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In Come unto Christ, President Benson offers five fundamental reasons to demonstrate why Latter-day Saints are Christian, with supporting chapters for each point: Latter-day Saints believe that Jesus Christ is divine. Latter-day Saints believe the teachings of Jesus and accept His admonitions and instructions as being binding on the entire human family. Latter-day Saints believe that Jesus Christ has restored His church on earth today, a church that bears all the hallmarks of the original church—apostolic authority, ordinances, and gifts of the Holy Spirit. Latter-day Saints believe that after He restored His church in modern times, Jesus Christ named it by revelation, and that members of that church are under obligation, as His disciples, to preach His gospel to all the world and to emulate the standards of His teachings to all men. Latter-day Saints believe that Jesus Christ will come again as the resurrected Lord and Master, and that He will cleanse the earth and establish His millennial reign on earth. In the Book of Mormon is an invitation for all mankind: "Come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; . . . and love God with all your might, mind and strength." (Moroni 10:32.) Come unto Christ outlines ways in which each individual can respond to this invitation. President Benson concludes his volume with his testimony, as a modern-day apostolic witness, that "Jesus Christ is uniquely qualified to provide hope, confidence, and strength to overcome the world and rise above our human failings."
