The New Rendition of First and Second Thessalonians provides a modern English translation of the Greek text while remaining true to Paul’s intent. This rendering is excerpted from Paul’s Letters to the Thessalonians by Richard D. Draper and Michael D. Rhodes. This new version clarifies many previously vague or misunderstood passages and enlightens the text for today’s readers. The rendition of First Thessalonians shows that the Jewish converts accepted Jesus as the Messiah, the anointed one of God, sent to do his will. He was the center of their hope. He held this place because converts understood that salvation came only through him in consequence of his death. Though he was killed by the Jews, he was raised from the dead. As a result, he can give love and inner strength to the faithful by which they achieve blamelessness and holiness. He will likewise rescue the faithful from the wrath to come, but he will also punish bad behavior. Finally, the Lord’s Second Coming will be as a thief in the night and he will not come alone but bring the righteous with him. This Rendition is part of the BYU New Testament Commentary series. This scholarly project aims to create a faithful modern English translation together with a full, in-depth, carefully researched Latter-day Saint commentary for each book on the New Testament. More of the New Rendition and commentary volumes will be added in coming months and years. As of 2023, volumes have been published on Mark, Luke, First and Second Corinthians, Ephesians, Hebrews, and Revelation. Translated by Michael D. Rhodes and Richard D. Draper
